Victoria – BC Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness Naomi Yamamoto on Fire Prevention Week:

“It’s Fire Prevention Week and our government is encouraging all British Columbians to replace smoke alarms every 10 years. We are sharing this message – “Don’t Wait, Check the Date” – during the Oct. 9-15 Fire Prevention Week to help keep British Columbians safe this Thanksgiving long weekend and beyond.

“Smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. To check how old your smoke alarm is, simply look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm.

“Smoke alarms save lives and provide early warning in the event of a fire, giving you time to take action with your fire escape plan. Although we hope you never have to use it, planning and practicing your home escape plan may one day save your life and the lives of your loved ones.

“The safety of all British Columbians is a top priority for our government. This is another step we can take together to ensure a safe future for our friends and family.”
