UFV Men And Women Golf Ranked #2

GOLF: Cascades men and women both ranked No. 2 nationally heading into PacWest finale

The University of the Fraser Valley golf teams are in parallel positions in the new Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national rankings released Tuesday.

Both the Cascades women’s and men’s squads check in at No. 2 in the latest edition of the national poll. The UFV women remained in the same position they held in the first ranking of the season, released Sept. 13, trailing only the reigning CCAA champion Humber Hawks. The men’s team, meanwhile, jumped two places from their previous spot at No. 4, just behind the Camosun Chargers.

The Cascades women hold a 42-stroke lead over the UBC Okanagan Heat (ranked No. 6 nationally) in the race for the PacWest conference team title with just one event – this weekend’s VIU Invitational at Morningstar Golf Club – remaining on the schedule. The UFV men sit second overall in the men’s team standings, and are looking to erase Camosun’s 14-stroke lead.

Cascades head coach Chris Bertram noted that the UFV women’s lead appears “rather insurmountable”, and feels the men are still within striking distance of Camosun.

“Morningstar is the kind of golf course where big lead shifts can happen,” he said. “It’s a challenging golf course, and our players know it well. If you need to make up ground, that’s the kind of course where you can do it.”

Park named athlete of the week

Sharon Park of the Cascades women’s golf team has earned PacWest women’s golf athlete of the week honours.

The rookie from Surrey, B.C. picked up her second individual tourney win in three PacWest conference starts last weekend at the Douglas Invitational at Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club in Coquitlam. She fired rounds of 76 and 80 to finish ahead of teammates Jennifer Kell (76-87=163) and Hannah Dirksen (79-85=164). Park also leapfrogged Dirksen in the overall standings – she’s amassed 483 strokes through three tourneys, with Dirksen (489) and Kell (492) in pursuit.
