Fraser Valley Collegiate Baseball Wrap September 17

Fairfield Island – Fraser Valley Collegiate Baseball  – Thursday Double Header FVCB vs TRU– 17 Sep 2015, Fairfield Island Ballpark Diamond D

* Game 1 at 3:45PM – Fraser Valley LOSS: TRU 10 at FVCB 7 (Box Score attached)

* Game 2 at 7:15PM – TIE: TRU 4 at FVCB 4 (Box Score attached)

You’re not going to win them all, even some of the games you absolutely should win. That was the story after the first game in Thursday’s double header against Thompson Rivers University’s (TRU) Wolfpack. The Wolfpack won a see-saw battle 10-7 in nine innings on a cool afternoon at Fairfield, giving the home side Fraser Valley Collegiate (FVCB) its first loss.

Shawn Corness, FVCB head coach, while expressing disappointment at the loss, enthusiastically noted that “this shows that we’re right there with all these guys.” Corness had been talking about his brand new team made up of all freshman players taking on the seasoned CCBC heavyweights, and being competitive to the point of feeling like a game got away.

FVCB, the new kid on the block in the Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) and fresh off a surprising opening day double header sweep of the VIBI Mariners, looked a little tentative at times in Thursday’s first game. “We should have blown that game open in the first two innings” said Corness. “A couple of poor at bats early took took them off the hook” referring to having the bases loaded with one out in both the first and second innings. As it was, the “Valley Boys” had lots of base runners, but not a lot of finish in that afternoon game, running into outs on the base paths a couple of times, and suffering a few miscues in the field on defence. “We’re learning to play the game the right way. We’re going to get rid of those sorts of mistakes. You saw it in the second game tonight how much better we played” said Corness talking about the improved defensive play in the second game of the double header.

Reliever #11 Evan Smith ended up taking the loss.

The second game of the double header ended in a 4-4 tie, as the teams had agreed on playing seven innings before the Wolfpack had to jump on a bus to head home to Kamloops. #4 Dylan Emmons pitched brilliantly for FVCB, going 5 innings on 82 pitches, striking out eight of the 20 batters he faced, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned on 3 hits and one walk. While Corness felt his team performed better in the second game, they still left 12 runners on base over seven innings and had a bit of trouble clutching up at the plate.

FVCB’s next games are on Saturday 20 Sep 2015 at noon at Fairfield Island Ballpark against Douglas College.
