Sockeye Run – Wait And See In Mid-August

Chilliwack/Abbotsford/Hope (Star FM) – The DFO – Department of Fisheries and Oceans, has no plans to open Sockeye fishing on the Fraser River any time soon.

But that could change in a hurry.

Lower Fraser Area Director Jennifer Nener says once the summer runs start coming they can re-evaluate.

“The second or third week of August is when we’ll start to see the largest component of the returns come through the river. So at this stage it’s still early so we have to wait and see how the numbers play out and how the timing works out with respect to Fraser sockeye.”

Nener says despite the cooler weather last weekend the flow levels and temperatures in the river are still worrisome.

She says any potential fishing opening might come at short notice.
