Langley City Survey – Concerns About Safety, Happy With Services

Langley City The City of Langley launched its 2019 Community Survey on September 16 to assess citizens’ satisfaction levels, with a specific focus on measuring satisfaction with municipal services, determining priority issues, and understanding citizens’ perceptions of quality of life, community safety and City communications. The “top of mind” questions selected for the 2019 Community Survey measured levels of support for parks and recreation improvements, waste and recycling services, and planning and land use policies, particularly relating to the City’s Nexus of Community visioning strategy.

Ipsos Public Affairs, a professional public opinion research company, conducted the 2019 Community Survey. Key findings of the survey generally indicate a positive and satisfied community. For example, the 2019 Community Survey found that:

  • 95% of residents rate the City’s overall quality of life as “very good” or “good”;
  • 93% of residents say they are satisfied with the overall level and quality of City services;
  • 87% of residents say they receive good value for their municipal tax dollars;
  • 67% of residents agree that Langley City is a safe and secure place to live.

Langley City residents identified social issues (49%), crime (29%) and transportation (21%) as the most important community issues, in line with previous surveys and similar to findings in other Lower Mainland communities.

The 2019 Community Survey also indicated levels of public support for various initiatives including the following:

  • 80% of residents say they would support the City funding part of the construction and operating cost of a performing arts centre in downtown Langley;
  • 72% of residents say they would support the City moving to toter service for a bi-weekly collection of waste and recyclables;
  • 65% of residents support the development of neighbourhood commercial nodes in residential areas south of the Nicomekl River;
  • 66% of residents indicated support for allowing secondary suites in separate detached buildings such as coach houses, garden suites or back yard suites;
  • 56% of residents say they would support allowing retail cannabis stores; and
  • Residents indicate support for several parks & recreation improvements including a wildlife interpretive centre along the Nicomekl River (76%), additional community gardens (74%), additional off-leash dog areas (65%), an indoor swimming pool (64%) and pocket parks in Downtown Langley (62%).
