Chilliwack – Chilliwack Community Services announced the opening of Downtown Family Place in partnership with School District 33, Chilliwack Central Elementary Community School Society, Sardis Doorway for Mothers and Children and Stó:lō Nation. Downtown Family Place was officially opened at a Grand Opening Ceremony on Monday July 22, at Central Elementary School. Downtown Family Place is funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
Located in downtown Chilliwack at Central Elementary School, Downtown Family Place offers a free, interactive drop-in centre for families with children from prenatal to age 6. This program features family, parent and child activities that builds strong families, enhances parenting and ensures early learning and school readiness in children. It will also provide navigation services, linking families to services in the community. The program runs both morning and afternoon groups throughout the week. It is a fun, welcoming space which offers opportunities for parent-child attachment, play based learning activities and parent education on various topics. Diane Janzen, Executive Director of Chilliwack Community Services, stated, “Downtown Family Place is a key service in building strong families, investing in children and enhancing skills for that most important, challenging and rewarding job, being a parent. It will also ensure that children on the north side of the freeway have access to services that build learning, social, physical and emotional development in those very important early years and ensure that they are ready for kindergarten.” Chilliwack Community Services expressed gratitude to their partners Stó:lō Nation, the Chilliwack School District, Sardis Doorway for Mothers and Children and to the Ministry of Children and Family Development that is providing the funding
