83 Year Old Mission Institution Inmate Dies, Separate Lockdown Ends

Mission – (Correctional Service Canada) – On June 22, Ralph Whitfield Morris an inmate from Mission Institution died while in custody.

At the time of his death, the 83 year old Morris had been serving an indeterminate sentence for Armed Robbery, Second Degree Murder, Escape Lawful Custody , and Utter Threats to Cause Death/Harm since August 20, 1975.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances and contact the police and the coroner if required.

Meanwhile the lockdown put in place at the medium security unit at Mission Institution on June 12 has ended and an exceptional search has been completed. The institution has resumed its normal operations.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent the entry of contraband into its institutions in order to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.

Visits to the institution have resumed.
