Yale Road Supportive Housing – Demo Of Traders Inn Underway (VIDEO)

Chilliwack – JUNE 1 UPDATE – Demolition of the old Traders Inn on Yale Road has started in earnest. It is now a visual distraction for motorists. Be prepared for delays as the rubberneckers want to stop their cars and watch.

RainCity Housing will operate the facility along with expertise from BC Housing and Fraser Health.

Demolition will be followed by a summer construction schedule. A three level complex with 46 units is on the drawing board. Tenants will have to meet requirements and be involved with a Program Agreement including life and health skills.

This is the start of a major push to ease the low income (and NO income) housing crunch in Chilliwack. The Salvation Army has already put their modular housing program on line. Ruth and Naomi’s (RAN) two buildings are still under construction as is a First Nations Project on Yale near Airport Road (the 80 unit Urban Village. Mamele’awt Qweesome and To’o Housing Society will operate that housing development).

The Yale Road (Traders Inn) project should be ready in early 2019.

MAY 10 – ORIGINAL STORY – During May 8-11 at the parking lot of Rotary Pool and next to Chilliwack Secondary School, an open house is underway, showcasing what a new supporting housing complex will look like.

This will replace the soon to be demolished Traders Inn on Yale Road, south of Downtown Chilliwack.

RainCity Housing will operate the facility along with expertise from BC Housing and Fraser Health.

A public hearing is set for 7PM Tuesday May 15 in the main chamber of Chilliwack City Hall.

Final reading for this zoning bylaw amendment should be following in a few weeks , with a summer construction schedule. A three level complex with 46 units is on the drawing board with (so far) very little opposition. Tenants will have to meet requirements and be involved with a Program Agreement including life and health skills.
