What Is Your Opinion Of Proposed Safe Injection Sites In The Fraser Valley?

Fraser Valley – Recently both Surrey and Abbotsford have been in the spotlight for proposed safe injections sites, ie: supervised, so that addicts can safely shoot up in a monitored atmosphere.

In Chilliwack, not only has the weather been colder, the feeling towards addicts is just the same. Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz is adamant that her city notes that this health issue is a Provincial matter and a recent plea from Chilliwack Outreach be aimed not at City Hall, rather to Victoria, Fraser Health and Chilliwack Healthier Community.

Chilliwack City Councillor Ken Popove is sure the opioid crisis is coming to the city, and is advocating for a supervised injection site stating that “It’s better to be proactive than reactive.”

Popove echoed Gaetz that the city needs Fraser Health to put money towards a site.

Late last year, Don Lehn, Editor of Fraser Valley News (also a recovered alcoholic and addict) emceed an addiction forum at Chilliwack Secondary, sponsored in part by Chilliwack healthier Community. Lehn is also a board member with the Chilliwack Alano Club, where they have seen this issue head on. Lehn has mixed feelings about safe injection sites. “There are a necessary evil in this day and age. Welcome to the new normal. Personally, those sites should be charged with not only being a safe place to shoot up, but the mandate should also be, to try and direct the addict to detox and recovery. there is doesn’t matter if its Harm Reduction, 12 Step (Spiritual), Rational Recovery or a Novelco (religious) series. But the options should be made available.
