UPDATE – Abbotsford New Years Day Robbery – Chilliwack Connection

Fraser Valley – CHILLIWACK RCMP UPDATE JANUARY 6 – RCMP are investigating a robbery spree in Chilliwack while a suspect remains in custody after being arrested by police in Abbotsford on New Year’s Day.

On December 19, 2016 at around 4 p.m., General Duty officers, supported by the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Section responded to a complaint of a robbery at a business in the 9200-block of Young Road.

As General Investigation Support Team (GIST) and General Duty officers supported by the Integrated Forensic Identification Section pursued their investigation a series of eight robberies were reported to the RCMP by businesses around the city from December 26-30.

During their investigation police quickly linked the nine robberies in Chilliwack and robbery investigations being conducted in Abbotsford by Abbotsford Police Department.

“Our GIST investigators worked closely with the Abbotsford police to identify a 28 year old man from Chilliwack as the suspect,” said Corporal Kyle Warner of the Chilliwack RCMP.

On January 1, 2017 the suspect was arrested in Abbotsford where he remains in custody.

ORIGINAL STORY From APD – JANUARY 2 – On Sunday night (January 1, 2017, at 6:00 pm) a man entered a jewelry store in Seven Oaks Mall in the 32900 block of South Fraser Way. The male selected various items with the assistance of a female store employee but instead of providing payment he produced a knife and demanded cash. The male fled the store with cash and the jewelry he selected.

APD Patrol Division and K9 officers deployed into the area around Seven Oaks Mall and a male suspect was observed in the mall parking lot. After a short foot pursuit and K9 track the suspect was taken into custody in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant adjacent to the mall.

The Abbotsford Police Department will be recommending a charge of robbery against the 28-year-old suspect. The man was also wanted for the robbery of a Chilliwack restaurant and is considered a suspect in a number of other recent Fraser Valley robberies.
