Ann Davis Society – Christmas Letter To The Editor

Chilliwack – Dear Chilliwack Community members,

It’s cold outside and once again winter is approaching, the threat of snow is looming on the horizon and it seems like its consistently nighttime. For families in crisis this is the most difficult time of the year. Last year Ann Davis Transition Society was able to provide service to a rising number of women, children and families, over 3,300 of whom over 700 were children because of help such as yours.

The key activities of Ann Davis Transition Society such as, our safe house for women and children fleeing violence, counselling, education, workshops, legal advocacy, supports, thrift store with free requisition for those in need and community outreach all work towards the focus of the organization which is to promote an abuse and violence free community are seen as an integral part of effective service to the community. The need for service in our community far outweighs the capacity unfortunately. Did you know that in the last quarter, we had to turn away over 300 women and children due to no space? Canadian Studies also confirm the desperate shortage of safe shelter for those experiencing violence and demonstrate that the availability of safe shelter for women and children fleeing violence is at a crisis point in BC and across Canada.

In a 2012 report, in just one day, 71 women in British Columbia were turned away from Transition Houses.
