Steelin’ In The Years – Steely Dan Tribute In Harrison Saturday November 19

Harrison – The Harrison Festival Society will present Vancouver-based band Steelin’ in the Years, who specialize in note-for-note performances of the music of popular 1970s band Steely Dan, on November 19 in Harrison’s Memorial Hall. Steely Dan was a group that, perhaps more than any of its contemporaries, successfully fused the accessibility of rock and pop songwriting with the sophistication of jazz and literary lyrics. The core of Steely Dan was songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Noteable 70s rock icons such as Michael McDonald, Denny Diaz, and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter were among the myriad of top notch studio musicians who appeared on their numerous Grammy winning records.

Steelin’ in the Years includes some longtime Vancouver session and gigging musicians such as singer Billy Mendoza (R and B Allstars), drummer Phil Robertson (Idle Eyes) and guitarist Andreas Schuld (Long John Baldry, Bill Bourne, Raffi). Alongside these seasoned players are some talented younger performers on the scene such as Geeta Das (winds) and Jason De Couto (keys). Many of these players, like the members of Steely Dan, combine the chops of jazz improv with the gut level feel for rock and roll.

According to artistic director Andy Hillhouse, the Festival Society rarely presents “tribute” bands. “We usually tend to present original or traditional music, however this seemed like a fun and unusually high quality act in the tribute band genre,” says Hillhouse. “As Steely Dan fans will know, their music is pretty sophisticated, but it is also catchy, entertaining, and often danceable. That balance of artfulness, quality, and mass appeal is something that makes a project like Steelin’ so compelling, as it is a challenge to reproduce and a pleasure to see live.” Hillhouse says “This show promises to be a little nostalgic for those of us who grew up with tunes like ‘Dirty Work,’ ‘Peg,’ and ‘Do it Again’ – there will be tunes to dance to and sing along with.” Hillhouse adds that it will be a chance to listen closely to the artistry that made Steely Dan rise above the standard fare of pop in the 1970s, as a band whose music appealed to the head and the hips.

The show will begin at 8PM, November 19 in the Harrison Memorial Hall. Tickets are $22 and can be purchased online at harrisonfestival.com, by phone at 604.796.3664, Agassiz Shoppers Drugmart, or at the door(if available).
