Chilliwack, BC – Tourism Chilliwack along with the City and the BCHL Chilliwack Chiefs are applying to host the 2018 Royal Bank Cup.
This is the annual tournament to determine the Canadian Junior A hockey championship. The formal letter of intent to Hockey Canada and the BCHL has been tendered.
Scott Beare with Tourism Chilliwack says this started with a conversation with Chilliwack Chiefs President Glen Ringdal to see if it was doable. From that a committee was put together co-chaired by Chilliwack City Councilor Ken Popove.
Popove told FVN that this is a natural as Chilliwack has successfully hosted the annual BCHL Showcase as well as other major events at Propera Centre including a past World Junior Hockey Championship.
Chilliwack will be hosting the training camp for the Swiss National Women’s team as they prepare for this year’s IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship in Kamloops.
Business wise, the city has shown it can host, facilitate and handle the tourist crush of these kind of events.
The winning bid will be announced this May at the 2016 RBC Cup in Lloydminster. The 2017 Tournament will be in Cobourg, Ontario.
