Chilliwack School Board By-Election December 12 – Replacing The Late Martha Wiens

Chilliwack, BC (With files from Chilliwack Times)-In recent memory, it seemed that a by-election for a vacant public political seat was due to some form of scandal.

This is not the case. The reason is a death in the family.

The byelection for the newly vacant Chilliwack board of education trustee seat will be December 12.

The by-election is to fill the vacancy left empty after long-time trustee Martha Wiens passed away suddenly, two weeks ago.

Under the School Act it has to take place between December 12 and January 16 (Timing factors under the school act(.

The motion was passed Tuesday night at the Chilliwack Board of Education meeting.

The tentative timeline in the proposal allows for the nomination period from October 27 to November 6 .

After that, candidates will be declared November 16 at 4 p.m.

Advanced voting days will take place on December 2 and 9, and the general voting day will follow on December 12.

The board has 30 days after the vacancy to advise city council, which then in turn has 30 days to appoint a chief electoral officer.

Getting back to the reason behind all of this, the public service for Martha Wiens will be held at Alliance Church on Young Road October 22 at 4 p.m.
