UFV Sports Saturday – Women’s Soccer Win Over Wesmen

Women’s Soccer: Zacharuk’s brace boosts Cascades to win over Wesmen

Brittney Zacharuk scored twice and Bryana Buttar extended her goal-scoring streak to three games as the University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team blanked the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 at MRC Sports Complex on Saturday evening.

The Cascades started slowly, but rookie midfielder Buttar gave them a lift, opening the scoring just before halftime to give the hosts the momentum. Zacharuk put the win on ice with a brace after the break, and UFV sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Perkovic – making her first start of the campaign – registered one save for her first career clean sheet.

The Cascades improved to 2-1-1, while the Wesmen (0-4-0) are still in search of their first win.

Afterward, UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht said that the timing of Buttar’s goal was huge for his squad after a lacklustre first 44 minutes.

“Our opponents were probably quite happy with how the first half went, and if they’d have gotten to half nil-nil, it’s a confidence-booster for them,” he said. “But the goal we got was some good work by our young players . . . It gave us a lift, and also, it was a wakeup call that we had to be better.

“We really improved in the second half, and took care of the game in the first 20 minutes (after halftime).”

Katie Lampen lit the fuse on the ice-breaking goal, finding fellow rookie Buttar deep in the box with a well-placed cross. Buttar took a touch to evade a Wesmen defender and fired a shot into the bottom right corner.

“Bryana is just emerging as a young leader with our team,” Giesbrecht enthused. “Her energy, her commitment to work, her consistency, I was expecting that from her, but it’s great to see her meet and even exceed expectations. That’s really exciting for us.”

Zacharuk, who became the Cascades’ all-time assists leader in Friday’s 4-2 win over the Manitoba Bisons, doubled the lead in the 56th minute. Moving to her right, the Cascades’ captain unleashed a sensational strike from 25 yards out that curled into the top corner just out of the reach of Winnipeg keeper Taryn Raabe.

In the 65th, Zacharuk had a free kick from just outside the box, but a Wesmen defender in the wall reached up and contacted the ball with her arm. The handball sent Zacharuk to the spot for a penalty kick, and she blasted a shot past Raabe to make it 3-0.

For the game, the Cascades outshot the Wesmen 18-2, and earned a 9-0 edge in corners.

Zacharuk picked up team MVP honours for the Cascades, while defender Chantal Boulet was the Wesmen selection. Giesbrecht also lauded the second-half boost that Simi Lehal gave his squad, and noted that Kate Fisher was influential off the bench.

The Cascades visit the city of Edmonton next weekend, taking on the MacEwan Griffins on Saturday and the Alberta Pandas on Sunday.
