Provincial Environmental Enforcement Penalties Total Nearly $200K In 1st Half Of 2018

Victoria – British Columbia’s Quarterly Environmental Enforcement Summaries for the first and second quarters of 2018 are publicly available.

The summaries outline various environmental enforcement actions taken by the Province, along with associated penalties and fines.

Enforcement actions in the first and second quarters of 2018 included:

  • 22 orders
  • 60 administrative sanctions
  • 827 violation tickets
  • 13 court convictions

These enforcement actions resulted in over $197,483 in penalties across the first two quarters of 2018. This brings the total to over $15 million in penalties since 2006, levied against companies and individuals for non-compliance.

To date, more than 31,000 enforcement actions have been published in the summary and entered into the ministry’s environmental violations database.

Examples of environmental non-compliance described in the quarterly summaries include:

  • hunting and fishing without a licence;
  • open burning out of season;
  • non-compliance with environmental legislation;
  • introducing waste into the environment; and
  • operating an off-road vehicle not registered under Motor Vehicle Act.
