Two In Custody After Fight With Chilliwack RCMP Police Dog

Chilliwack/Abbotsford  – Shortly after midnight on December 7, Police Service Dog (PSD) GRIFF and his partner were on patrol in Chilliwack, when they found a green Ford Explorer reported stolen from Surrey.

A coordinated effort with the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS) and Chilliwack RCMP officers, to apprehend the occupants of the stolen Ford Explorer, was executed. A traffic stop was initiated on Olds Drive. In an attempt to try and get away, the driver crashed into the Southside Church.

The stolen Ford Explorer sustained significant damage from the collision with the church, but the suspect was still motivated to escape and continued to drive the vehicle, colliding with a police vehicle.

That action immobilized the stolen vehicle but one of the suspects attempted to flee, says IPDS Media Relations Officer Corporal Mike Jordan.

PSD GRIFF quickly caught up with the suspect who, instead of giving up, began to fight with the police dog. Unfortunately, this only made matters worse for the driver. It’s not well-advised to pick a fight with a police dog, says Cpl. Jordan.

The suspect, who sustained an injury to his arm as a result of the fight with the police dog, was subsequently taken into custody. The passenger was arrested without incident.

Police found an imitation firearm that resembled a sub machine pistol and body armour worn by the driver was seized.

On another call that night, PSD GRIFF located two large bags believed to contain crystal methamphetamine inside a vehicle that had fled from the U.S. across the Canadian border, ending up in a ditch in Abbotsford. All in all, a busy night for the Lower Mainland’s gold star police dogs.

The investigations for both files are active and ongoing.
