Op/Ed – Does Xmas Tune, “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, Offend You? (3 VIDEOS) CBC Radio Re-instates Song

Fraser Valley -DECEMBER 11 – It is amazing what public opinion can do. Less than a week after Rogers, Bell and Stingray radio removed “Baby It’s Cold Outside” from holiday airplay, CBC music has made the decision to reintroduce it.

From a release courtesy of Chuck Thompson of CBC Public Affairs, the decision was made based on overwhelming feedback from listeners to include the song.

“As you know, last week we decided to press pause to consider the different points of view on playing “Baby It’s Cold Outside” . Because we value our audience input, which was overwhelmingly to include the song, we have put it back on the two playlists where it had been removed.”

Which is the public relations way of saying, the heard anf felt the pushback through social media.

DECEMBER 5 ORIGINAL STORY  – It all started with a Cleveland radio station, feeling pressure from the #MeToo movement, and radio programmers pulled the 1949 Christmas tune (Oscar Wining Best Song from “Neptune’s Daughter”) “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. The concern was with the lyrics which in 2018, are not politically correct.

“What’s in this drink?” and “Baby, don’t hold out.”

Other programmers in the US followed suit and now in Canada, Bell, Stingray and Rogers radio stations have done the same.

In Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, that includes Star FM, KiSS FM, Country 107.1, Jack FM and Mountain FM (all Rogers) as well as 103.5 QM-FM and 94.5 Virgin Radio (Bell) and Z95.3 and LG104.3 (Stingray).

Even the CBC dropped the song from their Christmas Playlist.

We put the question to you. Is the song offensive?

Other arguments include the concerns that this could be the tip of the iceberg.

“Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer” is about bullying.

“Santa Claus is Coming To Town” could be considered creepy. “He sees you when your sleeping, he knows when you’re awake.”

….and then there’s “The Grinch”  “6 White Boomers”, 12 Days Of Xmas – Bob and Doug McKenzie (‘that beer is empty”), Santa Baby, Please Daddy Don’t Get Drunk This Xmas and “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.”

Does the tune offend you?
