AUGUST 21 UPDATE – The British Columbia Wildfire Service (BCWS) continues to attack the Mt. Hicks Fire (previously known as the High Creek Fire) 10 kilometers east of the District of Kent. The fire has proven to be very difficult to work due to the steep terrain and difficult access to the fire front.

There are reports (Global) that fire is now threatening hydro lines that feed the Fraser Valley and Vancouver although so far, those lines and towers have not been touched.

Seabird Island has posted to Facebook 5PM Tuesday afternoon:

Hicks Lake Wildfire Update Aug 21/18

The Hicks Lake wildfire continues to grow with northerly outflow winds pushing it to the west and the Seabird Island Community. Although the fire is moving towards the community it remains to burn on the north side of the Maria Slough. The Maria Slough is a natural fire break protecting the community and it is expected to continue to steer the fire away from any residences.

At this time the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is confident that the fire will remain on the north side of the Slough and that the community is in a safe position. The Seabird Island Fire Department (SIFD) continues to work with the BCWS providing overnight fire watch on the north eastern border of the reserve.

At this time the District of Kent has issued an evacuation alert to the properties on Kamp Rd. due to the potential risk of fire spread. The fire continues to burn north and west down the hill towards the north end of Kamp Rd. Agassiz fire crews have a fire engine staged overnight on site monitoring fire behaviour.

BC Wildfire updates can be found here.

BCWS continues to work in the air and on the ground to battle the Mt. Hicks Fire that has grown to more than 150 hectares and continues to grow with 25% containment on the eastside. The Agassiz Fire Department continues to support BCWS firefighting operations as needed. The District of Kent Emergency Operations Centre has been opened as well to support firefighting efforts.

Environment Canada continues the air quality advisory for the region.
