Chilliwack RCMP Arrest Identity Thief

ChilliwackA 45-year-old Chilliwack man remains in custody facing charges after being arrested for identity theft by RCMP.

In February 2017 the Chilliwack RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) initiated an investigation after police received reports of a local man who was allegedly involved in property crime and credit card fraud.  During their complex investigation CRU officers supported by the Priority Offender Suppression Team (POST) covertly gathered evidence to link a suspect, the possession of stolen property, identity theft, and an address to the alleged crimes.

On March 23, 2017 the suspect, a 45 year old Chilliwack man, was taken into custody after he was stopped by police while driving in the 45000-block of Wellington Avenue.  During their search of the suspect and vehicle investigators located further evidence linking the man to stolen property and identity theft.

The arrest was followed later that evening with the execution of a search warrant in the 9500-block of Corbould Street by CRU and POST officers where police seized altered identification, credit cards, and banking information.  Five people taken into custody during the execution of the warrant were later released at the address by police.

Gregory James Cromarty faces criminal charges for possession of stolen credit card, possession of stolen property, personation, and possession of a forged document.  Cromarty remains in custody pending a court appearance in late April.
