Coroner ID’s Stanley Cup Rioter Who Died In Custody

New West/Abbotsford – The BC Coroners Service has confirmed it is investigating the case of a man who died while in custody on February 22, 2016.

He is William Ryan Fisher, aged 30.

Mr. Fisher was in custody at North Fraser Pre-trial Facility. On Feb 22, 2016, he was scheduled to be transferred to Pacific Institution, a federal facility in Abbotsford to begin serving a three-year federal term to which he had been sentenced on Feb. 19. During the early morning hours of Feb 22, 2016, Mr. Fisher went into medical distress at North Fraser Pre-trial and was transported to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster for treatment. He died in hospital three days later.

The BC Coroners Service, provincial and federal corrections officials and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

Fisher was the last of the Stanley Cup rioters to be sentenced as was given the stiffest sentence of three years.,

The family of Mr. Fisher has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
