Chilliwack Fisherman Drowns On Valentines Day

Chilliwack, BC – Sadly it is a common story in our end of the Fraser Valley. A local fisherman on the slippery banks of a roaring river, slips and is carried away to their death.

This happened around 4 PM on Valentines Day, when a fisherman did just that.

A person on the shoreline of the Chilliwack River near the Alison Pools heard the screams.

RCMP plus Chilliwack Search and Rescue were called in, but it was too late. The man in his 20’s was washed away a couple of kilometers downstream.

The BC Coroner released their report on Monday: The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following an incident on the Chilliwack River on Feb. 14, 2016.

He was Graeme Gordon Carswell, aged 21, of Delta.

Mr. Carswell was fishing with a companion on the banks of the Chilliwack River on the afternoon of Feb. 14, 2016, when he fell into the river and was swept away by the current. His companion was not able to rescue him and called for help.

RCMP and Search-and-Rescue personnel were able to rescue Mr. Carswell from the river several kilometres downstream from the place where he had fallen. He was taken to Chilliwack General Hospital, but was not able to be resuscitated.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

Mr. Carswell’s family has been notified of his death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service asks that media respect their privacy at this difficult time.
