In their media release, Mounties said the car “left the roadway, struck a lamp standard and traveled several meters from the roadway, coming to rest in a treed area.”

The driver, who was from Agassiz, died at the scene.

It was a night of heavy rain, and police said the roads were slick and speed may have been a factor.

Chilliwack RCMP Information Officer Mike Rail told FVN that the name will not be released until the Coroner files his report. FVN has been told that the driver was Stephen Barten but again, the BC Coroner and RCMP will not confirm the name.  Memorial tributes have been placed on Facebook.
