Movement On The Old Chilliwack Safeway Site

Chilliwack, BC – The old Main Street Safeway Building in Chilliwack is edging closer to becoming a memory instead of the current blight in the Downtown core.

Everyone jumped for joy in August when the announcement was made that Sobey’s, the owner of Safeway, literally got on one knee and apologized for dragging their collective feet over the taking down of the ol’ girl.

Those stories can be found here:

The decision.

Sobey’s says sorry.

The Safeway site is set to be demolished by Clearview Grinding Ltd., the same company that struck down the old Chilliwack Secondary School in 2013. The site should be rubble by the end of November.

Wash stations for possible contaminate removal (ie asbestos) can be seen behind the fences surrounding the demo site.

Signs are now up announcing that the re-zoning applications are  in flux to change the area from commercial to high density, multi family housing.with comprehensive development.

In plain English, apartments with shops on the bottom floor, similar to, but not imitating Garrison Crossing.

Should the procedure all go well, Chilliwack City Council will hear first reading of this application on October 20 (3 PM session) and a public hearing should be in place for November 3.
