Chilliwack, BC – Aidan Pelino had one of the easier shutouts he’ll ever have, blanking the Surrey Eagles 6-0 Wednesday night at Prospera Centre.
Tending net behind an airtight Chilliwack Chiefs D, Pelino stopped 16 shots, leading his crew to their second straight clean sheet.
Ryan Roseboom had two goals for the victors, who nudged their early-season record over .500 at 3-2-1-1 and dropped sad-sack Surrey to 1-6-0-0.
Olivier Arseneau opened the scoring for the Chiefs, netting his first of the season 7:19 into period one.
Jordan Kawaguchi drew the assist. Chilliwack’s captain flew into the Surrey zone down the right-wing wall, drawing two defenders to him. He slammed on the breaks at the bottom of the right faceoff circle and threw a centering pass into the crease where Olivier popped it past Eagles netminder Justin LaForest.
The Surrey stopper held the Chiefs at bay for the remainder of the opening frame and six minutes of the middle frame, then the floodgates burst open. Ryan Roseboom netted his first at 6:08 when he slipped behind Surrey defenders Nathan Deyell and Ludvig Adamsen and beat LaForest through the five-hole.
Roseboom scored again on a power play at 9:40. D-man Carter Cochrane did what he does with a daring end-to-end solo rush that ended behind the Eagles net. Roseboom came out from behind the cage and tucked a backhand shot through Laforest’s legs for a 3-0 lead.
Brendan Riley added the fourth Chiefs goal at 11:30 on a play started by rookie Kohen Olischefski. The Abbotsford native glided down the wing and threw a centering pass toward Jesse Lansdell. He was stopped but Riley popped in the rebound.
A Kawaguchi goal at 11:40 ended LaForest’s night.
The 20 year old was lifted for backup Daniel Davidson, who surrendered a goal on the first shot he faced.
Vimal Sukumaran notched his sixth of the year on a solo foray.
Davidson had one of his own blueliners knock him over as Sukumaran cut through the slot, and Sukumaran buried the biscuit into the unguarded cage.
Shots on goal through 40 minutes reflected Chilliwack’s dominance, favouring the home team 28-10.
With the game out of hand, tempers started boiling over in the third period.
The Eagles went goon-show and ended the game with only three skaters on the ice and six on the bench thanks to several majors and misconducts.
The three stars were Roseboom (first), Jeremy Germain (second) and Pelino (third).
The Fortis BC Energy Player of the Game was Riley.
